Book Shelvers

Students reading a lot of books is certainly a positive, says Cindy Jones, FLE librarian, but with several hundred books needing to be shelved each day as a result, it was becoming difficult for her to keep up.
LaDonna Pyle, USD 249 board member, came up with a solution: Create a volunteer library assistant program.
“I called people I knew, they gave me more names, and those I contacted were really excited to get to do it,” she said. The majority of the community members who assist are retired.
“Their comments back to Ms. Jones have been very positive,” Pyle said. “They enjoy seeing the kids and making a difference in the school.”
With a team of 10 volunteers and six substitutes, Pyle created a schedule that provides two people each morning for a few hours, and an additional person on Friday afternoon to get books shelved before the weekend.
Volunteers are Helen Brooks, Judy Spurgeon, Nellie Kozjek, Jack Druart, Betty, Garrison, Patricia Terlip, Janette Gebhardt, Mary Ann Brunetti Young, Lorna Alexander, Gayle Moody, and Elizabeth Kelly. Subs are Dorothy Matthews, Mona Wachter, Velma Ciardullo, Shirley Menghini, Mary Lou Murray, and Patricia Mendicki.
