What is a polymer? What type of gel is in a disposable diaper? What does a seed need to germinate? What does a bioengineer do? These were some questions that fifth grade students from Frontenac were asked at the beginning of their recent field trip to the Science Center at Greenbush.

The field trip experience was titled "Experiencing Hydrogels." This was developed by area teachers in conjunction with Kansas University teachers last summer. The data was sent to KU so that they could see how a "real" class did.

"The kids had a great day and came home with some hydrogels of their own," said Diane Deplue, fifth grade teacher. "They also came home with 3 samples of lima beans one of  just potting soil, one of potting soil and hydrogels, and one of just hydrogels. So far the beans in the hydrogels have done the best."

The students will continue to monitor the experiment to determine results.
