March 11, 2010
Thursday, March 4, five Frontenac high school students headed to Columbus High School for their first ever 'Clash of the Poets' competition. Thirty students presented their poems in front of their peers to show off their talents and maybe win a cash prize.
Seniors Mike Holland and Kassandra Buffington and juniors Brandon Wright, Logan Falletti and Morgan Grisham participated and recited the poems they wrote themselves. A Fallen Hero, by Mike, Paper Skin, by Kassandra, Designer Purse, by Logan, Enough, by Morgan, and The Paper I was Typing, were among the many fantastic and well thought of poems heard.
Brandon Wright took home third place and $75 with his poem, a funny little tale about the one thing that annoys most students; 'The spinning rainbow ball of doom'.
"I hope to go to another poetry competition real soon," said Grisham.
"I was really proud of them," said teacher Andra Stefanoni, who took them. "It takes a lot of nerve to get up in front of a crowd like that and not only recite a poem, but one that is very personal because they wrote it. They are very creative!"
Wright's winning poem:
The Paper I was Typing
The sound of a mouse clicking
The keyboard clack, clack, clacking
The screen a bright white glow
The sound of YouTube playing
And the words that I'm typing
Help my imagination grow
Oh dear, what is this?
Why does it not respond?
Oh dear, now YouTube has paused!
The paper I was typing
Has stopped writing!
Oh, it is you again...my old friend
Why do you torment me so?
You kill my imagination!
I have class obligations!
Oh, little spinning rainbow ball of doom, you sadden me so
Spinning rainbow ball of gloom
Oh, how I hate you.
